Basic jewelry in its most rudimentry form has been used since man began to use of tools and clothing. Cavemen made simple jewelry of animal teeth, claws, and bones. They also made jewelry from seeds, stones, and feathers. Jewelry was made of leather or reeds strung with pebbles, berries, feathers, shells. People started to make jewelry from ivory, wood, and metal. People also used silver, copper, and bronze. In 3500 B.C., gold heated with fire could be pounded into thin sheets and then shaped. The earliest known record of the making jewelry of gold is found in Egypt. Egyptian jewelry making reached its peak, especially in goldsmithing, during the twelfth dynasty from 1991-1786 BC. Gold was and still is a favorite metal for jewelry. By the 2000's B.C., Egyptians used gemstones for making bracelets, brooches, headdresses, pendents, and rings.

The Romans loved jewelry. Rings made of gold, jet, and other materials were worn by both male and female. Sometimes they put a lot on the same finger! Egyptian,Assyrian,Babylonians and other ancient societies had artists that were very skilled in metal arts for jewelry and other ornamental use. The Aztecs,Incas and Myans all made elaborate jewelry and other ornamental and religious items from gold. Many examples exist in museums of the very fine work that they were able to create even with the crude tools they used compared to our modern shops today.

Most likely, jewelry started out as a functional item used to pin articles of clothing together and was later adapted to a purely aesthetic adornment. Closely related to the human need for ornamentation was the use of jewelry as amulets endowed with magical powers. People wore jewelry for religious reasons. Certain jewelry could prevent sickness and protect them from bad luck. They believed jewelry had magical powers and believed it would bring them good luck. Early in its inception, jewelry was associated with religious rites. Gold and jewels were used as gifts for the maintenance of worship. In accordance with this began the presumption that benefits could be derived from their wear and soon began the development of a complex network of fictitious powers being attributed to them. Curiously, many of these legends surrounding the benefits of certain stones were generally held all over the world. Gold and certain gems common to many parts of the globe were believed to yield similar virtues. For a true understanding of the growth and history of the importance of jewelry and precious stones, one has to be aware of the indelible belief that precious stones could affect the fortunes of the wearer. Jewelry was made with certain convictions in mind, to meld into, conform to and strengthen beliefs. This was particularly true when religions began to form an important sociological bond.

Jewels have always been used as love tokens and whilst many pieces were fine gems and precious metals, good fake jewelery intended to deceive existed. True gemstones and pearls originated from the east and were bought chiefly by the Italians. As decorative objects, jewelry is usually made of platinum, gold, silver and other precious metals often set with precious and semi-precious stones. Jewelry is also made from various non-precious materials like glass, corals, wood, enamels, ceramics, bronze, copper, lead, gun metal, fedders and bone fragments. Silver,Gold,Copper,Brass,Bronz,Nickel,Nickel Silver and other more modern metals like stainless steel, titanium is used for jewelry and other personal ornaments as they have been discovered and skills for metal working them have been developed.

Service organizations such as the Elks, Lions and others use jewelry as a way to show who is a member and what is the rank of the person wearing the jewelry. The military has its own jewelry to indicate the branch the person belongs to and the rank. Thankfully most jewelry is not used for such serious things. Many of us have High School class rings.
